Overview

Chemotherapy refers to the use of cytotoxic drugs designed to destroy rapidly dividing cells. It is most commonly used for cancer treatment because cancer cells typically divide and grow much faster than normal body cells. Chemotherapy drugs work by interfering with cell division (mitosis), damaging DNA, or disrupting cellular machinery involved in replication and growth. Because chemotherapy targets all rapidly dividing cells—not just malignant ones—it often affects healthy tissues such as hair follicles, gastrointestinal lining, bone marrow, and skin.
