Chemotherapy sensitivity

01

Overview

Chemotherapy sensitivity refers to the degree to which cancer cells respond to the cytotoxic or cytostatic effects of chemotherapeutic agents. It is not a specific molecular target (such as a receptor or enzyme) but rather a complex phenotypic outcome determined by the genetic, epigenetic, and microenvironmental landscape of a tumor. Factors influencing this state include the efficiency of drug uptake and efflux transporters, the integrity of DNA repair pathways, the functionality of apoptotic signaling, and the rate of cellular proliferation. In clinical practice, high chemotherapy sensitivity is associated with better pathological response and improved patient survival, whereas low sensitivity, often termed chemoresistance, remains a primary obstacle to successful cancer treatment. Research in this area focuses on identifying biomarkers that can predict sensitivity to allow for more personalized and effective therapeutic strategies.
