Chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV) is a small, non-enveloped, single-stranded circular DNA virus belonging to the genus Gyrovirus within the family Anelloviridae (ICTV, 2023). It is the primary causative agent of chicken infectious anemia, a condition characterized by severe aplastic anemia and systemic lymphoid atrophy in young chicks, leading to significant immunosuppression (MSD Veterinary Manual). The viral genome encodes three proteins: VP1 (capsid), VP2 (scaffold/phosphatase), and VP3, also known as Apoptin (UniProt). Apoptin is of particular interest in biotechnology because it induces p53-independent apoptosis specifically in transformed or malignant cells while sparing normal cells (PubMed, PMID: 16418673). In veterinary medicine, the virus is targeted primarily through live attenuated or inactivated vaccines administered to breeder flocks to provide passive immunity to offspring (ScienceDirect). While no specific small-molecule antivirals are currently used, the virus remains a major focus for poultry health management and a model for studying selective apoptosis in oncology.
Vaccines against Chicken infectious anemia virus function by eliciting neutralizing antibodies, primarily directed at the VP1 capsid protein, which prevent viral attachment and entry into host hemocytoblasts and T-cell precursors. In experimental contexts, the viral protein Apoptin (VP3) acts as a therapeutic agent by translocating to the nucleus of tumor cells and inducing p53-independent apoptosis through the activation of caspase cascades (PubMed, PMID: 16418673).
