Overview

Chicken B lymphocytes in the bursa of Fabricius are the primary cells responsible for the humoral immune response in avian species, maturing within a specialized lymphoid organ unique to birds (Glick et al., 1956). These cells are distinct from mammalian B cells in their development, as they rely on the bursa for the diversification of their immunoglobulin repertoire through a process known as gene conversion rather than extensive V(D)J recombination (Reynaud et al., 1987). They serve as the specific host cells for the Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV), which causes significant economic impact in the poultry industry by inducing lymphoid depletion and profound immunosuppression (Müller et al., 2003). While not a single molecular target, these cells are the focus of veterinary vaccine strategies and serve as a model for understanding B cell development and diversification. Pharmacological intervention in these cells is typically limited to vaccination or experimental immunosuppression using agents like cyclophosphamide. Their health and proliferation are critical indicators of the overall immune status of the avian host.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable as this is a cellular population; however, veterinary vaccines work by inducing protective immunity within these cells, while agents like cyclophosphamide cause their depletion to study immunodeficiency.
