Overview
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne, positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the genus Alphavirus in the family Togaviridae. It is the causative agent of chikungunya fever, a disease characterized by acute onset of fever and severe joint pain (arthralgia), often accompanied by rash and other systemic symptoms. No specific antiviral therapy exists for CHIKV infection; management is supportive. No licensed vaccine as of April 2025—several candidates remain under development/trial phase. Prevention focuses on vector control measures and personal protection against mosquito bites in endemic areas.
