The Chikungunya virus E1 envelope protein is a critical structural component of the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), an alphavirus transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. It functions as a class II viral fusion protein, playing a primary role in the fusion of the viral envelope with the host endosomal membrane following receptor-mediated endocytosis [1][2]. E1 exists as a heterodimer with the E2 glycoprotein on the viral surface; while E2 facilitates initial attachment to host receptors, E1 mediates the low-pH-triggered conformational change necessary for membrane penetration [3].
