Chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR T cells) are a form of cell-based gene therapy in which a patient's own immune cells, specifically T lymphocytes, are genetically engineered to express artificial receptors called chimeric antigen receptors (CARs). These modified receptors enable the T cells to recognize and attack specific antigens present on the surface of cancer cells. CARs are synthetic proteins that combine an antigen-binding domain with intracellular signaling domains that activate the T cell upon binding to its target. CAR-T therapy has shown remarkable efficacy against certain hematologic malignancies—especially relapsed/refractory leukemias and lymphomas—where conventional treatments have failed. While effective, this therapy can cause significant side effects like Cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and Neurotoxicity.
