Overview

Chimpanzee adenovirus type 3 (cAd3) is a replication-defective adenoviral vector derived from chimpanzees. It is used as a delivery system for vaccines and gene therapies. Engineered with deletions in the E1 region to prevent replication in human cells, cAd3 can carry genetic material encoding antigens from pathogens or therapeutic genes into host cells, triggering an immune response or delivering a therapeutic effect without causing viral infection. Its low prevalence of pre-existing immunity in humans makes it an attractive vector for vaccine development and gene therapy applications.

Mechanism of action

The cAd3 vector delivers a transgene (e.g., viral antigen) into host cells. The host cells then express the transgene, leading to the production of the antigen. This triggers an immune response, including antibody production and T-cell activation, providing protection against the pathogen from which the antigen was derived.
