Overview

Chitinase, acidic pseudogene 1 (CHIAP1) is a pseudogene in the human genome that is homologous to functional chitinase genes, such as chitinase 1 (CHIT1) and acidic mammalian chitinase (CHIA), but it does not encode a catalytically active enzyme. Chitinases are part of the glycosyl hydrolase family 18 and are typically involved in the degradation of chitin, an important function in host defense and some metabolic processes in mammals[2][3]. However, CHIAP1 is not functional due to disruptions in its coding sequence, such as frame shifts or stop codons that prevent the translation of an active protein product. As a pseudogene, CHIAP1 has no known physiological function, is not associated with therapeutic targeting or drug interactions, and serves neither as a receptor nor as a biomarker. Any references to enzyme activity or disease function should be directed at CHIT1 (chitinase 1 or chitotriosidase), which is a catalytically active human chitinase involved in immune defense, various disease states (such as Gaucher’s disease), and investigated for use as a biomarker of therapy[2]. CHIAP1 is distinct from CHIT1 and should not be confused with the active enzyme or its disease associations.\nIf you are seeking information about the therapeutically relevant chitinase target, you may want to refer to "chitotriosidase (CHIT1)", not "chitinase, acidic pseudogene 1 (CHIAP1)"[2][3][4].
