Overview

Chlamydia trachomatis is a Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterium and the causative agent of chlamydia, one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide. It is also responsible for trachoma, a leading infectious cause of blindness globally. The bacterium primarily infects mucosal epithelial cells in the genital tract, rectum, and conjunctiva. It exists in two forms: the infectious elementary body (EB) and the replicative reticulate body (RB). Infection triggers innate immune responses via TLRs and NOD-like receptors. Diagnosis relies on NAAT testing, and treatment involves antibiotics like tetracyclines or macrolides. There is currently no vaccine available.
