Chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) is a bacterial enzyme (EC 2.3.1.28) that confers antibiotic resistance by catalyzing the acetylation of chloramphenicol, thus preventing its binding to bacterial ribosomes and inhibiting protein synthesis. CAT exists as a trimer and its activity inactivates chloramphenicol, thiamphenicol, and azidamfenicol.
