Overview

Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) is a complex, water-soluble extract derived from the nucleus of the green microalgae Chlorella, primarily Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorella pyrenoidosa [1, 3]. It is a unique nutrient mixture produced during the algae's rapid photosynthesis and is composed of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), amino acids, peptides, vitamins, minerals, and polysaccharides [1, 5, 8]. CGF is not a specific molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme; rather, it is a dietary supplement ingredient valued for its purported ability to promote cellular regeneration, enhance immune response, and provide antioxidant protection [2, 4, 10]. Research suggests that CGF may stimulate growth-related signaling pathways, including MAPK, PI3K/Akt, and Wnt, and support the body's natural healing processes by providing essential building blocks for genetic material repair [7, 9]. Despite its popularity in the wellness industry, particularly in Japan, CGF lacks a single defined mechanism of action and its therapeutic efficacy is largely supported by animal studies and small-scale human trials [3, 7].

Mechanism of action

Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) acts by stimulating cellular signaling pathways such as MAPK, PI3K/Akt, and Wnt, which promote cell proliferation and protein expression [7]. It also provides essential nucleic acid precursors (DNA and RNA) and amino acids that serve as building blocks for cellular repair and regeneration [2, 4]. Additionally, CGF modulates the immune system by promoting the production of Th1 cytokines and interferon, enhancing the activity of macrophages and natural killer cells [1, 10].
