Chloride reabsorption in the ascending limb of the loop of Henle is a crucial renal process responsible for maintaining electrolyte and water balance, generating dilute urine, and contributing to the medullary osmotic gradient. It occurs via passive transport in the thin ascending limb and active transport, primarily through the NKCC2 cotransporter, in the thick ascending limb. This process is essential for regulating extracellular fluid volume and blood pressure. Dysfunction leads to disorders like Bartter syndrome.
