Choline esters are a group of quaternary ammonium compounds that function as direct-acting cholinergic agonists, mimicking the effects of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (StatPearls, NBK538163). This class includes endogenous acetylcholine as well as synthetic analogs such as bethanechol, carbachol, and methacholine, which vary in their resistance to degradation by cholinesterase enzymes and their selectivity for muscarinic versus nicotinic receptors (PubChem, Choline Esters).
