Choline Transporter (ChT)

Target
ChT
Molecular classification
Transporter, Membrane protein
01

Overview

The choline transporter is a membrane protein responsible for the uptake of choline into cells, particularly neurons that synthesize acetylcholine. There are several types of choline transporters, including the high-affinity choline transporter (CHT1/SLC5A7) primarily found in cholinergic neurons, choline transporter-like protein 1 (CTL1) which is an intermediate-affinity, Na+-independent transporter and choline transporter-like protein 2 (CTL2) which is a low-affinity transporter highly expressed on mitochondrial membranes. FLVCR2 is also identified as a primary brain choline importer at the blood-brain barrier. These transporters play crucial roles in maintaining adequate levels of acetylcholine, neurotransmission, and cellular metabolism. Inhibitors like Hemicholinium-3 (HC-3) can block choline transport, impairing acetylcholine synthesis.
