Cholinergic receptor muscarinic (mAChR) is a type of acetylcholine receptor that is a G protein-coupled receptor. There are five subtypes, M1-M5, which are widely distributed in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. They mediate parasympathetic nervous system responses and are involved in various physiological functions, including heart rate regulation, smooth muscle contraction, glandular secretion, and cognitive processes. Drugs targeting mAChRs are used to treat a variety of conditions, but their use is often limited by anticholinergic side effects.
Agonists or antagonists of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors modulate downstream signaling pathways, including activation or inhibition of phospholipase C (PLC) and adenylate cyclase, affecting intracellular calcium levels and cAMP production.
