Cholinesterase refers to a family of enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of choline esters, most notably the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This reaction is essential for terminating synaptic transmission at cholinergic synapses, allowing neurons and muscles to return to their resting state after activation. There are two main types: Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), primarily found at neuromuscular junctions and synapses, and Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), mainly found in blood plasma. Inhibition or deficiency of cholinesterases has significant clinical implications, including toxic exposure and neurodegenerative diseases. Drugs like donepezil, rivastigmine, and galantamine are used to inhibit cholinesterases in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
