Chondroadherin-like protein (CHADL) is a small leucine-rich repeat proteoglycan (SLRP) located in the extracellular matrix, primarily in cartilaginous tissues. CHADL binds collagen and regulates the organization of collagen fibrils, playing a negative regulatory role in collagen fibrillogenesis. It modulates chondrocyte (cartilage cell) differentiation — knockdown of the gene accelerates cartilage formation and matrix deposition. CHADL's molecular profile and functions are similar to other SLRP family proteins, but it is distinguished by its tissue-specific role in cartilage and potential as a biomarker for early tissue degeneration and biomechanical alteration. There is currently no evidence that CHADL functions as a direct therapeutic target for drugs, nor is it categorized as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor.
