Chondrocyte-derived neocartilage refers to engineered cartilage tissue created from chondrocytes, the specialized cells responsible for producing and maintaining the extracellular matrix of native cartilage. This neocartilage is typically generated in vitro using autologous chondrocytes that are expanded, embedded in a supportive scaffold—often collagen-based—and then implanted into cartilage defects to promote repair and regeneration. It aims to accelerate healing by rebuilding damaged knee cartilage with tissue that closely mimics native joint surfaces and treat pain at its source with the goal of preventing progression to osteoarthritis.
