The principal components synthesized are type II collagen and aggrecan, along with other proteoglycans and non-collagenous proteins. The process is crucial for cartilage development, maintenance, and repair. ECM synthesis is tightly regulated by growth factors, cytokines, mechanical stress, and transcription factors (notably SOX9). Disruption of chondrocyte ECM synthesis or turnover leads to degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis, as the balance of ECM production and breakdown becomes dysregulated[2][3][4].
