"Chondrocyte extracellular matrix synthesis" describes the process by which chondrocytes (the chief cells of cartilage) produce and regulate the unique macromolecular network (ECM) that gives cartilage its mechanical properties. The principal components synthesized are type II collagen and aggrecan, along with other proteoglycans and non-collagenous proteins. The process is crucial for cartilage development, maintenance, and repair. ECM synthesis is tightly regulated by growth factors, cytokines, mechanical stress, and transcription factors (notably SOX9).
