Chondroitin sulfate is a highly variable sulfated glycosaminoglycan composed of repeating disaccharide units—D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine—often attached to core proteins forming proteoglycans within the extracellular matrix. It plays critical roles in providing structural integrity to cartilage by resisting compressive forces through osmotic swelling pressure. Beyond its mechanical functions, chondroitin sulfate interacts with numerous signaling molecules—including growth factors and cytokines—to regulate cellular behaviors such as proliferation and differentiation.
