Overview

Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) are a family of extracellular matrix molecules characterized by a core protein covalently linked to one or more chondroitin sulfate glycosaminoglycan (GAG) side chains. CSPGs are found in various tissues, including cartilage and the central nervous system, where they play critical roles in structural support and cellular signaling. They are involved in cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, receptor binding, and interaction with other extracellular matrix components. In the CNS, CSPGs regulate axon guidance during development and are upregulated after injury, inhibiting axon regeneration. They also influence synaptic plasticity. CSPGs are implicated in neurological disorders and tumor biology.
