Chorionic gonadotropin subunit beta 2 (CGB2) is a member of the glycoprotein hormone beta chain gene family located on chromosome 19q13.3 in tandem with other hCG beta subunit genes. CGB2 was originally classified as a pseudogene, but transcripts have been observed in vivo and translated on polysomes[1][2]. However, a definitive protein product corresponding to CGB2 has not been isolated. Its deduced protein sequence does not share homology with other functional hCG beta subunits responsible for hormone activity in pregnancy, and thus CGB2 is not considered functionally relevant in human physiology[1][2]. While the functional hCG beta subunits play key roles in pregnancy, immune tolerance, angiogenesis, and cellular signaling, there is no evidence that CGB2 participates in these biological processes[1][2]. Accordingly, CGB2 is not an authentic drug target, molecular biomarker, or contributor to disease mechanisms. The gene’s existence highlights the complexity and redundancy of the hCG beta gene cluster, but CGB2 itself offers no validated protein or clinical utility in humans[1][2].
