Chorionic gonadotropin subunit beta 3 (CGB3) is one of several highly homologous genes encoding the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a heterodimeric glycoprotein hormone produced by trophoblastic cells in the placenta during pregnancy[1][2][5][6]. hCG consists of a common alpha subunit (shared with LH, FSH, and TSH hormones) and a unique beta subunit, which imparts biological specificity[2][6]. The CGB3 gene, located on chromosome 19q13.3, encodes a 145-amino acid polypeptide essential for stimulating steroidogenesis, progesterone production, and maternal adaptation to pregnancy[1][2][5]. The beta subunit is also clinically significant as a biomarker for pregnancy and various cancers, and as a therapeutic target or reagent in fertility treatments and certain diagnostic applications[2][6].
