Choroidal neovascular endothelial cells are specialized vascular endothelial cells located in the choroid layer of the eye. These cells play a central role in choroidal neovascularization (CNV), a pathological process characterized by the growth of new blood vessels from the choroid into subretinal spaces, commonly observed in diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The targeting strategy involves inducing cell death or dysfunction in choroidal neovascular endothelial cells through a photooxidation reaction using an activated photosensitizer, resulting in the generation of reactive oxygen species and subsequent cellular damage.
