Overview

CHRM3 antisense RNA 1 (CHRM3-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene found in humans and classified as an antisense RNA because it is transcribed from the DNA strand opposite the CHRM3 gene locus[7][9][14]. Antisense RNAs typically function by regulating the expression of their corresponding sense gene (in this case, CHRM3, which encodes the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M3) through mechanisms such as RNA-RNA duplex formation, chromatin modulation, or transcriptional interference[2][16]. CHRM3-AS1 is not a protein or receptor, and there is currently no evidence to support its role as a direct therapeutic target or drug-interacting biomolecule. Limited functional studies exist specifically for CHRM3-AS1, but by analogy to other antisense lncRNAs, it is presumed to participate in local regulation of gene expression, which may contribute to disease processes if dysregulated[2][16]. Currently, databases associate CHRM3-AS1 with the RNA gene class and note a possible link to retinitis pigmentosa, but its precise biological and clinical significance remains to be clarified[7][14].
