Overview

The chromaffin granule amine transporter (CGAT), also known as vesicular monoamine transporter 1 (VMAT1), is a membrane protein responsible for packaging monoamine neurotransmitters into secretory vesicles within adrenal chromaffin cells and other aminergic cells. This process is essential for the regulated storage and release of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. CGAT mediates the active transport of cytosolic monoamines into storage vesicles by exchanging one cationic monoamine with two intravesicular protons, relying on a proton gradient generated by vacuolar-type H+-ATPase. Inhibition of CGAT can lead to depletion of monoamine stores and associated side effects.
