Overview
Chromium is a transition metal and essential trace element primarily known for its role in regulating glucose metabolism. Trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) enhances insulin action by binding to chromodulin, potentially activating insulin receptors. While traditionally considered essential, its strict necessity is debated. Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is highly toxic. Dietary sources include brewer’s yeast, wheat germ, and kidney meats. Industrially, chromium is used in steel production, chrome plating, and as pigments.
