Chromogenic dental pigments are colored compounds that deposit on the tooth surface, resulting in extrinsic discoloration. These pigments are frequently produced as metabolic byproducts by specific oral microflora, notably chromogenic bacteria such as Actinomyces, Prevotella, and Porphyromonas species, which can react with iron in saliva to form black ferric sulfide (PMID: 25821453). They can also be introduced exogenously through the consumption of tannins, coffee, tea, or medications like chlorhexidine and iron supplements (StatPearls, Tooth Discoloration). While not a biological target like a receptor or enzyme, these pigments are clinically significant in dentistry for aesthetic reasons and are managed through professional prophylaxis or chemical bleaching using agents like hydrogen peroxide. Interestingly, the presence of certain chromogenic stains, particularly black stains, has been paradoxically associated with a lower incidence of dental caries in some pediatric populations (PMID: 30034312).
