Chromogenic molecules are a diverse class of chemical compounds that produce a detectable color change when acted upon by a specific enzyme or chemical catalyst. They are fundamental tools in biochemistry and clinical diagnostics, used to visualize and quantify the presence of specific proteins, nucleic acids, or small molecules in biological samples (Thermo Fisher Scientific, 2024). In applications like immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), these molecules serve as substrates for enzymes such as horseradish peroxidase or alkaline phosphatase, resulting in a stable, colored precipitate or solution (Sigma-Aldrich, 2024). While they are indispensable for identifying disease biomarkers and pathogens, chromogenic molecules are not therapeutic targets and do not possess pharmacological activity for treating diseases. Their primary role is to provide a readable output for analytical assays, enabling researchers and clinicians to monitor biological activity or diagnose conditions based on color intensity (NIH, 2023).
Chromogenic molecules act as substrates that undergo enzymatic conversion (e.g., oxidation or hydrolysis) to form a colored product, enabling the visualization of specific biochemical reactions (Abcam, 2023).
