Overview

Chromosome 1 open reading frame 198 (C1orf198) is a widely expressed serine- and proline-rich protein with highest expression in lung, brain, and spinal cord tissues. Encoded on chromosome 1q42, it contains a conserved domain of unknown function (DUF4706). Conditional expression depends on upstream regulatory proteins such as FBP2 and is predicted to be regulated by transcription factors including HIF (hypoxia-induced factor), USF, ETS, and XCPE1, linking it to cellular responses to oxygen deprivation. Subcellular localization is primarily cytoplasmic, with possible mitochondrial targeting. Notably, C1orf198 interacts with the mitochondrial import receptor TOMM20 and hypoxia-associated factor SART1, reinforcing its potential involvement in hypoxia and mitochondrial biology. There is currently no direct evidence implicating C1orf198 in therapeutic targeting, disease causality, or biomarker utility. Its molecular role remains to be fully elucidated
