Overview

Chromosome 15 open reading frame 48 protein (C15orf48; also known as NMES1, COXFA4L3, FOAP-11, MOCCI, MISTRAV, and other aliases) is a nuclear-encoded accessory protein of the mitochondrial electron transport chain complex IV (cytochrome c oxidase). It was initially identified due to its reduced expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and is normally expressed in tissues such as the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, and placenta[2][5]. The protein has been implicated in modulating cytochrome c oxidase activity during inflammation and mitochondrial stress response. While not a classic drug target like a receptor or enzyme, it is associated with disease contexts such as carcinoma and may serve as a biomarker for certain pathologies[5][1].
