Chromosome 15 open reading frame 61 (C15orf61) is an uncharacterized human protein-coding gene encoding a 157-amino-acid protein, with predicted mitochondrial localization and a conserved domain (DUF4528)[1][2][3]. This protein is ubiquitously expressed, with relatively higher levels in skeletal muscle, fat, and cerebellar brain tissue[1]. It shows strong evolutionary conservation among mammals and contains a predicted signal peptide, one transmembrane region, and rich histidine/arginine/tryptophan content[1]. Its biological function is incompletely understood but it is thought to be involved in mitochondrial bioenergetics and possibly transcriptional regulation, as it has been correlated with mitochondrial respiratory conductance and shown altered expression in several disease models, including autoimmune diseases, mitochondrial dysfunction, and aging[1][2].
