Chromosome 18 open reading frame 16 pseudogene (C18orf16 pseudogene, ENSG00000251516) is a nonfunctional segment of DNA in Homo sapiens, annotated as a pseudogene. Pseudogenes are sequences that closely resemble functional genes but have lost their ability to encode functional proteins due to mutations such as frameshifts or premature stop codons. Although most pseudogenes are nonfunctional, some have been implicated in gene regulation at the RNA level in certain contexts, through mechanisms such as generating regulatory RNAs or acting as competing endogenous RNAs. However, the vast majority—including C18orf16 pseudogene—have no known protein-coding function or established physiological or pathological role, and they are not considered therapeutic targets[1][2][3][4][7][8].
