Overview

Chromosome 19 open reading frame 33 (C19orf33) is a protein-coding gene whose protein product is known as Immortalization-upregulated protein. The protein, which has two transcript variants (IMUP-1 and IMUP-2), is primarily localized to the nucleus but may also be found in the cytosol and at the plasma membrane. Its expression is upregulated in SV40-immortalized fibroblasts and various carcinoma cell types. The protein is suggested to play roles in placental development and diseases such as pre-eclampsia, as well as in endometrial and pancreatic cancers. Mechanistically, it is associated with DNA binding and possibly with cell proliferation, apoptosis, and cancer-related signaling pathways, but does not belong to conventional drug-target classes like receptors or enzymes.
