Chromosome 3 open reading frame 18 (C3orf18) encodes a predicted membrane-associated protein of 162 amino acids. The function of C3orf18 is currently uncharacterized and remains largely unknown[1][9]. It may play a role as a biomarker for resistance to endocrine therapy in breast cancer, as altered promoter methylation and gene expression have been linked to poor prognosis and treatment failure in estrogen receptor–positive breast cancer[1]. The gene is also associated with corneal abscess and deep keratitis, although the mechanisms are unclear[9]. No definitive classification as a therapeutic target (e.g., receptor, enzyme, transporter) has been established, and no interacting drugs or established therapeutic mechanisms of action have been reported. The protein is annotated as “uncharacterized” in major protein databases and is not currently considered a standard therapeutic target[1][9].
