Overview

Chromosome 5 open reading frame 24 (C5orf24) encodes a ubiquitously expressed, nuclear-localized protein that is highly conserved across vertebrate species[2][6]. It has alternative transcript variants leading to protein isoforms of 188 and 155 amino acids, containing disordered regions and post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation and ubiquitination[2]. The gene’s function remains largely uncharacterized, but it has been implicated by transcriptomic and genetic association studies as dynamically regulated in response to immune and metabolic stress, especially in the context of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and is associated with disease traits such as Parkinson's and Crohn's disease[2][4]. Protein interaction studies suggest C5orf24 complexes with key signaling and transcriptional regulators such as STK11 (LKB1), CAB39, PBX1, and others[2][3][5]. There are no known approved drugs or targeted modulators, and its status as a therapeutic target is currently unsubstantiated due to lack of defined function and druggability information[5][6].
