Overview

Chromosome 6 open reading frame 118 (C6orf118) encodes an uncharacterized protein containing a translin-associated factor X-interacting N-terminus (TRAX) domain, which is involved in RNA binding and RNA nuclease activity, as well as the regulation of mitochondrial function and cellular homeostasis. The protein is predominantly localized to the mitochondria, cytosol, and nucleus, and is expressed at low to moderate levels across most tissues, with some higher expression in fetal brain, lung, trachea, salivary gland, and testis. Several isoforms exist, and its mRNA shows conserved regulatory elements. Disease associations include mitochondrial dysfunction, immune regulation, and variable expression in tuberculosis and immune cells. Direct therapeutic or drug targeting applications have not been established; its biological function is still under investigation.
