Overview

Chromosome 6 open reading frame 136 (C6orf136) is a poorly characterized human protein encoded by the C6orf136 gene and contains a conserved DUF2358 domain of unknown function.[1] The gene is broadly expressed, including in heart, intestine, brain, and kidney, and its protein is predicted to localize to the nucleus in humans.[1] The molecular function of C6orf136 remains unelucidated, but studies indicate it may play a role in cancer, especially as a target for FOXM1-induced hypermethylation in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, and as a prognostic biomarker in bladder cancer through its involvement in self-renewal, migration, and invasion of cancer stem cells.[1][2][3] There are no known drugs targeting C6orf136, and no established mechanisms of action for modulators, reflecting its status as an uncharacterized or research-stage molecular entity rather than a validated therapeutic target.
