Chromosome 8 open reading frame 34 is a protein-coding human gene (C8orf34) that encodes a small, monomeric, predominantly unstructured protein. It shows relationship to cyclic AMP dependent protein kinase regulators and is ubiquitously expressed across tissues. Naturally occurring mutations in C8orf34 have been linked to increased susceptibility to severe toxicities (such as diarrhea and neutropenia) in patients treated with chemotherapy. The protein has aliases such as VEST-1 and VEST1, and though it is referenced in disease-association studies (e.g., agammaglobulinemia 7, immunodeficiency 36, colon cancer), its precise biological function and mechanism remain unclear. There are currently no drugs known to target this protein, and it is not considered a validated therapeutic target.
