Chromosome X open reading frame 40A pseudogene (CXorf40A pseudogene; ENSG00000271578) is annotated in the human genome as a pseudogene located on chromosome X. Pseudogenes are nonfunctional DNA segments that resemble protein-coding genes, usually formed by duplication or retrotransposition of functional genes. They typically do not produce functional proteins due to disabling mutations such as premature stop codons or frameshifts. While some pseudogenes may be transcribed and have regulatory RNA functions, there is no evidence that CXorf40A pseudogene encodes any functional RNA or protein, nor is it considered a target for therapeutic intervention. Pseudogenes in general can sometimes contribute to cellular regulation indirectly (e.g., as miRNA sponges or sources of siRNAs), but most are not functional and are considered genomic “junk”. CXorf40A pseudogene does not have established disease roles, drug interactions, or utility as a therapeutic target according to current annotation.
