Overview

Chromosome X open reading frame 58 (CXorf58) is a protein-coding gene encoding an uncharacterized protein that is highly conserved across species and expressed most abundantly in testis, especially in sperm cells, with localization to the cytoplasm[1]. The protein displays structural features rich in basic amino acids, contains several phosphorylation and glycosylation sites, and exists as at least two isoforms. Although its precise biological function is not yet validated, bioinformatics and expression studies suggest potential involvement in cilia-associated or flagellar functions, especially relating to spermatogenesis[1][2][3]. Proteomic analyses have observed increased expression in models of hepatocellular carcinoma, hinting at a possible regulatory role in liver cancer, but these findings remain preliminary[3]. CXorf58 has been shown to interact with proteins involved in processes such as protein ubiquitination, transcriptional regulation, and signal transduction[1]. No drugs, disease biomarkers, or defined therapeutic applications are currently associated with this molecule, and its role as a therapeutic target has not been established. Note: The lack of functional annotation means that most statements regarding function or disease relevance are hypothetical and based on indirect evidence such as expression profiles or bioinformatic prediction. Experimental validation is lacking[2][3].
