Chronic lymphocytic leukemia up-regulated 1 (CLLU1) is a human gene initially thought to encode a protein, but current evidence classifies it as a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene. CLLU1 is specifically and highly upregulated in chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells and is not expressed in other tissues or hematological malignancies. Its function remains unknown: the gene is human-specific, poorly conserved across species, and protein expression from CLLU1 has not been convincingly detected. CLLU1 expression is stable within CLL cell clones and is used as a robust marker for prognostic and diagnostic classification of CLL patients, but is not targeted by any therapies nor recognized as a receptor, enzyme, or other classic drug target.
