Overview

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease associated long non-coding RNA 1 (COPDA1) is a long non-coding RNA strongly associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is encoded at the genomic locus RP11-731F5.2. COPDA1 is significantly upregulated in lung tissues from patients with COPD compared to controls, and experimental studies show it promotes proliferation of human airway smooth muscle cells (HBSMCs), likely by upregulating expression of the gene MS4A1, thereby increasing store-operated calcium entry and contributing to airway remodeling—a central process in the progression and severity of COPD. As a non-coding RNA, it acts mainly via modulation of other genes rather than encoding a protein. Recent studies implicate COPDA1 as a potential therapeutic target for genetic or RNA-based interventions in COPD, but there are no known drug ligands or inhibitors specific to this lncRNA as of 2024. In other contexts, such as colorectal cancer, RP11-731F5.2/COPDA1 has also been found to be differentially expressed, suggesting possible broader disease relevance.
