Overview

Chronic total occlusion (CTO) refers to a complete blockage (100% occlusion) of a coronary artery persisting for three months or longer, usually caused by atherosclerotic plaque formation. CTO is a severe manifestation of coronary artery disease and commonly results in symptoms of angina, shortness of breath, and increased risk for myocardial infarction. Treatments focus on restoring blood flow, often through percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stenting or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). CTO is assessed by angiography and is not a protein, gene, or molecular receptor but a clinical syndrome caused by physical obstruction in a blood vessel.
