Chymotrypsin-like elastase family member 2B (CELA2B) is a human enzyme encoded by the CELA2B gene. It belongs to the serine protease family, specifically one of six closely related elastases found in humans. CELA2B is synthesized in the pancreas as a zymogen (inactive precursor) and is secreted into the duodenum where it contributes to protein digestion by hydrolyzing peptide bonds after specific hydrophobic amino acids, especially leucine, methionine, and phenylalanine. This enzyme is structurally similar to other human elastases, such as elastase 2A and 3A, and is classified under EC 3.4.21.71. Unlike some other elastases, no specific small molecule inhibitors or drugs are currently known to target CELA2B, and its direct clinical or diagnostic utility as a biomarker or drug target is currently limited. There are some disease associations in genetic studies, but a clear mechanistic role has yet to be established for these[1][2][4][5].
