Target
CELA3A
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine protease

Overview

Chymotrypsin-like elastase family member 3A (CELA3A) is a serine protease enzyme produced by the pancreas and secreted into the intestine in an inactive (zymogen) form, where it aids in digestion by preferentially cleaving peptide bonds after alanine residues. It shows little true elastolytic activity compared to other elastases. CELA3A has an important role in the intestinal digestion of dietary proteins and may also facilitate the intestinal transport and metabolism of cholesterol. It belongs to the peptidase S1 family of serine endopeptidases. Clinically, its activity is measured in fecal assays (as "fecal elastase-1") to assess pancreatic exocrine function, but it is not a common direct therapeutic target[1][2][9].

Biological functions

03

Disease associations

Other (mainly digestive dysfunction if mutated or deficient)no clear association with cancer, inflammation, or other major diseases at present
04

Safety considerations

Potential for off-target effects if inhibited, such as impaired protein digestion or altered nutrient absorption, but this is theoretical (there are no drugs that directly inhibit CELA3A clinically)
05

Biomarkers

Fecal elastase-1 (measured to assess exocrine pancreatic function, but most commercial assays do not distinguish CELA3A from similar elastases)[2]
