Chymotrypsin-like Protease

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Protease, Serine protease, Cysteine protease
01

Overview

Chymotrypsin-like proteases are a class of serine or cysteine proteases characterized by their substrate specificity and structural features. They play essential roles in both physiological processes (such as digestion) and in the life cycles of certain viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. Human chymotrypsins are digestive enzymes that hydrolyze dietary proteins. Viral chymotrypsin-like proteases, such as the SARS-CoV-2 main protease (3CLpro or Mpro), are essential for processing viral polyproteins into functional units required for replication, making them attractive antiviral drug targets.
