Molecular Classification
Enzyme, Serine protease, Zymogen
Disease Roles
Chymotrypsinogen B Overview
Chymotrypsinogen B is an inactive precursor (zymogen) of chymotrypsin B, a digestive serine protease enzyme. It is synthesized in the acinar cells of the pancreas and secreted into the small intestine, where it is activated to its enzymatic form. The active enzyme cleaves peptide bonds on the carboxyl side of aromatic amino acids in dietary proteins.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibition of chymotrypsin activity (after activation)
Biological Functions
Protein digestion
Proteolysis
Disease Associations
Pancreatic disorders
Safety Considerations
- Autodigestion of pancreatic tissue if prematurely activated
