Cilia- and flagella-associated protein 299 (CFAP299) is a cytoplasmic protein encoded by the CFAP299 gene on chromosome 4q21.21 in humans, with homologs in a wide range of eukaryotes. The protein is 233 amino acids long, contains a single highly conserved DUF4464 domain, and is predicted to be involved in spermatogenesis and apoptosis. Expression is highest in testes and ciliated tissues such as trachea and lungs, but is also found in multiple other tissues. Reduced CFAP299 expression is observed in some male infertility syndromes (notably teratozoospermia) and certain cancers; abnormal expression has also been linked to airway cell dysfunction. The molecular function and mechanisms remain poorly characterized, with no current drug or targeted therapeutic associations. Protein interacts with amyloid precursor protein (APP) and BCL2-associated athanogene 3 (BAG3), suggesting possible roles in cell survival and apoptotic pathways[2][3][4].
